About Syncrude
Syncrude is one of the largest operations in Canada’s oil sands industry, with an over 55-year history of innovation. Based in Fort McMurray, Alberta, and with a large research and development facility in Edmonton, Syncrude is a joint venture operated by Suncor and is known for pioneering many of the processes used in the industry, including an expanding suite of technologies to improve environmental and future economic performance.

Our History
Syncrude has a rich history dating back to the 1950s, but the oil sands of Northern Alberta have a history all their own going back nearly 100 years before Canada even became a country.

Joint Venture Governance
The Syncrude Project is a Joint Venture undertaking among Suncor Energy Inc., Imperial Oil Resources Limited; Sinopec Oil Sands Partnership; and CNOOC Oil Sands Canada. Suncor’s interest is held by Canadian Oil Sands Partnership #1 and Suncor Energy Ventures Partnership, both wholly owned affiliates of Suncor Energy Inc., as the project owners (the “Owners”). Suncor Energy (Syncrude) Operating Inc. is the project operator.

Business Conduct

MLX Project
The Mildred Lake Extension project (MLX) will sustain Syncrude’s current production levels by extending the life of our North Mine. It received regulatory approval in 2019 and is expected to be operational by the mid-2020s.

Regulations and Monitoring
Syncrude is subject to a number of federal and provincial oversight and regulations.
Our primary legislated environmental obligations are detailed in operating approvals issued by the Alberta government under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) and the Oil Sands Conservation Act (OSCA).

COVID-19 Response
Syncrude continues to actively respond to the threat of the COVID-19 virus and is taking the necessary measures to help prevent further spread. Nothing is more important than protecting the health and well-being of our employees, contractors, their families, and our community.

Contractor Learning
Syncrude has created a new online learning platform for contractors. This Contractor Learning Academy is used to register for classroom or virtual classes and to complete any self-study training requirements as part of contract work on Syncrude sites.
