Syncrude Good Neighbours grants assist Fort McMurray traveling soccer team

Jo-Jo Hill is proud to be born and raised in Fort McMurray. She’s also happy to raise her family here.

A second generation Syncrude employee, Jo-Jo is aware of the benefits available to employees, such as Good Neighbour volunteer and busing grants.

Jo-Jo’s daughter is following in her mother’s footsteps and has become an active community member. Grace is an avid soccer player and her team uses the busing grants to help with transportation costs. As the only Under-13 female Fury soccer team in the city, the group often has to travel out of the Wood Buffalo region for games and tournaments.

The only competitive games they can play in Fort McMurray are against boys teams in their age group. It does make them stronger in many ways but it also means that in order to play other girls teams in the same age group we have to travel to out of town tournaments throughout Alberta.

Macky Singh, Technical Director with the Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association (FMYSA), adds that fundraising initiatives, grants, sponsorship and donations are vital in allowing travel teams to compete.

Sports provide many benefits to her daughter and other youth, says Jo-Jo.

Everything from a sense of belonging, increased confidence, learning to be a part of a team, resiliency, and learning to manage stressful situations in positive ways.

Macky echoes these comments, “Sports help kids live an active and healthy lifestyle. It also helps them develop socially, and the basic fundamentals of physical and mental skills that are important to function in everyday life.”

Syncrude is proud to support organizations such as the FMYSA to improve the quality of life in the communities where we live and work.
