Fort McMurray SPCA improves animal welfare thanks to employees

Four months after receiving $25,000 from Syncrude thanks to votes cast by our employees, the Fort McMurray Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (FMSPCA) is using the funds to support animal welfare.

The FMSPCA is a local not-for-profit that rescues, reunites and rehomes animals. Employees voted for the FMSPCA to receive this donation through the 2017 Give with Heart campaign that recognizes employee volunteerism. It sees employees direct $50,000 of donations to local non-profits in Wood Buffalo, Edmonton and Calgary.

It’s organizations like the FMSPCA that help better the place we work, live and play – and they rely on the generosity of the public through donations, fundraisers and volunteers.

“We are much more than an animal shelter,” says Natalie Kemeny, Vice-President, FMSPCA. “We are a hub of programming and services to strengthen and connect the lives of our community members from the youngest to our seniors and build on the important social connectors that companion animals play in our lives.”

The FMSPCA cares for about 30 animals a day, depending on the time of year and offers a wide range of community programs including large-scale spay and neuter clinics.

This very generous donation from Syncrude will be used for day-to-day operations such as purchasing food for our shelter animals, providing medical care, large-scale spay and neutering clinics, and any additional surgeries an animal may require due to previous medical needs or neglect.

The most recent Give with Heart campaign focused on five not-for-profits including the SPCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Heritage Park Historical Society, Fort McMurray Search & Rescue, and the Kinette Club. Employees voted for the FMSPCA to take home top prize, while the four runners up received $5,000 each. In addition, one non-profit from Edmonton and Calgary also received a $2,500 donation.

Syncrude aims to improve the quality of life for all residents by supporting projects with cash and in-kind support. Additionally, through the Good Neighbours Program, employees who give of their time and talent to community organizations can apply for grants to support those organizations.
