Syncrude project earns engineering award

A Syncrude project was the recent recipient of the Award of Excellence in the Natural Resources, Mining and Industry category at the 2018 Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) Awards.

The annual gala took place on February 23 in Edmonton and recognized excellence in consulting engineering in Alberta and throughout the world. Judging focused on project uniqueness, complexity and technical excellence.

Described as a “complex and collaborative project” involving Syncrude, Worley Parsons, Amec Foster Wheeler, Tetra Tech Canada and North American Construction, the East In-Pit Overflow Structure is one of the largest culvert systems in Western Canada and is located within Syncrude’s dam under Highway 63.

The Alberta Innovators Magazine recently said “the design, construction stages and field execution of this time-sensitive project assured safety, minimized risks, complied with the dam license requirements and allowed continued operation of Highway 63 during the construction period.”

Award judges noted the large, complex project was undertaken with significant time, safety and site related constraints. All aspects of the design and execution were completed without incident – a great example of teamwork and performance in all of the relevant criteria areas.
