Syncrude recognized for leadership in mining

Syncrude has been recognized by the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) with a 2017 Leadership Award for our commitment to sustainable and responsible development.

As a member of the mining association, Syncrude participates in the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) program which is focused on improving both environmental performance and social impacts on local communities. Each year, Syncrude self-assesses itself against the TSM requirements and every three years undergoes an external verification to further evaluate our progress.

Syncrude was assessed on six indicators, or protocols: Aboriginal and Community Outreach, Biodiversity Conservation Management, Energy Use and GHG Emissions Management, Safety and Health, Tailings Management, and Crisis Management and Communications Planning.

Assessments use a bond-like rating system (C, B, A, AA, AAA). A TSM Leadership Award is granted only when a facility meets or exceeds a Level A ranking for all indicators under each protocol. To be eligible for a TSM Leadership Award, a facility’s results must have been externally verified in that year.

“This award speaks to the amazing efforts of everyone within the Syncrude operation who, each day, reinforce our commitment to responsible development,” says Peter Read, Vice President of Strategic Planning, and member of the MAC Board of Directors and Executive Committee. “The TSM program continues to be implemented in many other mining jurisdictions around the world and this recognition places Syncrude among the best anywhere in the industry.”

Syncrude joins four other companies who were recognized this year, including Teck Resources.

“We are pleased to recognize the TSM Leadership Award winners, which is an important and rare distinction that celebrates a facility for its achievements in the TSM initiative,” says Pierre Gratton, MAC President and CEO. “These facilities have demonstrated leadership in environmental management and for how they engage with their communities, and we congratulate them for being a model for other mine sites across Canada.”

The Leadership Award winners were announced alongside the release of the 2017 TSM Progress Report which provides a detailed examination of the environmental and social performance of Canadian mining companies.
