Employees vote to give $25,000 to the Centre of Hope

Syncrude employees voted to donate $25,000 to the Centre of Hope in their annual Give with Heart campaign

Syncrude employees voted to donate $25,000 to the Centre of Hope in their annual Give with Heart campaign.

Employees chose the Centre of Hope after two rounds of balloting. In the first vote, employees selected five non-profit groups from a long list of organizations that received a grant from the Good Neighbours program. In the second round of voting, the Centre of Hope received the most votes among the five finalists.

“It’s a tremendous honour to receive this donation. It says a lot that Syncrude employees voted to give it to us,” said Stephen Bryant, the Centre of Hope’s executive director.

The people who volunteer here see the passion of our team at working to end homelessness in Wood Buffalo.

The centre provides services and programming to help the homeless in the region, including housing placements, laundry services, showers and mail delivery.

The four remaining finalists – Santas Anonymous, the Fort McMurray Chinese-Canadian Cultural Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Sanatan Mandir Cultural Society of Fort McMurray – each received a $5,000 grant from Syncrude. Grants of $2,500 were also awarded to a non-profit organization in both Edmonton and Calgary.

Syncrude gives $500 to an eligible non-profit group when an employee or retiree volunteers at least 40 hours in a year and applies for a grant.

That included $104,000 going to community groups to help offset the cost of travel to out-of-town events such as sports tournaments. Syncrude donates about $6 million annually to different groups, projects and events through its community investment program to improve the quality of life in communities where its employees work and live.
