Syncrude receives award for youth employment

The Alberta Chambers of Commerce recognized Syncrude’s commitment to hiring and retaining young workers with the Alberta Business Employer of Youth Award of Distinction.

The award recognizes an organization that has “demonstrated outstanding achievement in hiring youth and provided them with career-oriented opportunities.”

“This award affirms we are meeting our goal of hiring young people and giving them the opportunity for a challenging and rewarding career with an organization who is committed to responsible oil sands development,” said Donelda Patterson, Syncrude’s Manager – HR Services.

Judges noted Syncrude’s mentoring program that pairs new employees with more experienced colleagues to make new employees more comfortable in their roles and give them the opportunity to learn the work from a seasoned, experienced role model. The company’s program that organizes quarterly social events for young employees and the opportunity for them to sign up for one-on-one consultations with a senior employee was also cited.

Syncrude was also named as a finalist for the Alberta Business Awards Aboriginal Relations – Best Practice Award of Distinction. Syncrude previously won that category in 2010.

Syncrude is committed to being the employer of choice in the region and this recognition suggests we are on the right track in meeting that goal.
