Syncrude announced today its intention to begin stakeholder consultations for two proposed mining areas near its Mildred Lake facility.
As part of that process, Syncrude will release a public disclosure document to launch the regulatory process and allow time for meaningful and effective consultation.
The Mildred Lake Mine Extension Project will provide a replacement supply of bitumen for upgrading when its existing mine approaches the end of its oil sands deposit. The two new mining areas are adjacent to the current mine at Mildred Lake and will use existing ore crushing and extraction facilities.
Initial project scoping is underway and Syncrude anticipates filing a formal regulatory submission in 2014. Pending regulatory and final joint venture owner approvals, construction is expected to commence within the next 10 years.
The Syncrude Project is a Joint Venture undertaking among Canadian Oil Sands Limited, Imperial Oil Resources, Mocal Energy Limited, Murphy Oil Company Ltd., Nexen Oil Sands Partnership, Sinopec Oil Sands Partnership and Suncor Energy Oil and Gas Partnership.
