Syncrude’s commitment to responsible development was recently recognized with a Mining Association of Canada (MAC) 2010 Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) award.
During its annual Mining Day on the Hill on Nov. 22, 2011, the national mining association recognized Syncrude for its efforts related to tailings management, external outreach and crisis management planning. The organization received the top score in the external outreach category, representing excellence and leadership.
“This recognition demonstrates that we are serious about our responsibility to produce the oil society needs, while managing the environmental impacts of our development,” said Syncrude President and CEO Scott Sullivan. “The TSM program promotes and encourages continuous improvement in all areas of our business.”
Launched in 2004, MAC’s Towards Sustainable Mining program helps the industry improve its performance by aligning mining activity with the priorities and values of its communities of interest. It helps the industry operate in a proactive, socially responsible way. In 2007, Syncrude was the first ever to receive a TSM award for meeting performance standards in all categories.
Syncrude was also recognized in November for its efforts in reporting on its performance. The organization took top honours in the category of “Best Sustainability Report” at the Oilweek Annual Report Awards in Calgary on Nov. 24, 2011. Since 2002, Syncrude has produced a comprehensive, stand-alone report on its progress related to environmental impacts and compliance with regulatory and professional standards. Syncrude strives to provide useful information for the community and stakeholders in a clear and transparent manner.
