Syncrude’s commitment for attracting new Canadians to its organization and helping to support their transition to a new country and workplace was recognized by a national blue-ribbon organization.
Syncrude was named as one of Canada’s Top Employers for New Canadians for the second straight year.
Syncrude’s hiring approach explores alternate ways of attracting the necessary skills and experiences in a competitive labour market. Today, the organization recognizes the foreign education and experience of qualified immigrants and will assist employees, as necessary, in obtaining their required Canadian professional designation.
“Syncrude’s diverse employees are the reason for our success,” said Vivian Van Alstine, Syncrude’s Manager of Human Resources.
Celebrating this recognition reminds us how much we are able to accomplish by working together and the value in creating a work environment that fosters teamwork, mutual respect and career development opportunities which encourage a long term career with Syncrude.

Syncrude recruiters regularly attend English as a second language courses at the region’s post-secondary institution, Keyano College, to speak to students on career opportunities. Also, Syncrude has hired employees out of university co-op programs which attract many foreign students.
This is the second time this year that Syncrude has been recognized as a top employer. In January, Syncrude was chosen as one of Alberta’s Top Employers for 2011 because it offers ongoing employee development through formal mentoring, in-house and online training initiatives, and tuition subsidies for courses.
More than 1,900 people joined Syncrude between 2008 and 2009. More than 200 post-secondary students complete work terms with the oil sands producer.
As part of the company mentoring program, all new employees are matched with a senior employee in their chosen field who introduces them to the workplace and guides them through procedures, expectations and organizational values.
