Syncrude funds Evergreen Theatre performances in Wood Buffalo

FORT McMURRAY, Alberta – Local youth learned about the importance of habitat protection and minimizing environmental impacts through Evergreen Theatre’s performances in Wood Buffalo schools this month.

Syncrude donated the funds to support nine performances by the Calgary-based Evergreen Theatre group. The interactive science-based hour-long performance by Evergreen features a mystery that discusses endangered species.

During the show entitled Lost, students are asked to help solve the mystery of the missing species. At the end of the show, the students shout out the answers to the mystery. This exchange between the performers and the audience offers students the chance to engage with the concepts in the show as active participants. Their active participation means that they will take ideas about ways to protect species home with them.

“We’re very pleased to support Evergreen Theatre’s efforts to teach local youth how they can play a part in protecting the environment,” said Scott Sullivan, Syncrude President and CEO.

Syncrude believes we all need to do our part and that includes continuous improvement in our own environmental performance.

Over one week in March, the tour group presented at schools in Anzac, Conklin and Fort McKay as well as eight schools in Fort McMurray including Greely Road School, Dr. K.A. Clark School,Father Turcotte School, Good Shepherd Community School, Beacon Hill School, St. MarthaSchool, St. Gabriel School and Westview School.

“Students walk away from watching a performance of Lost understanding the connection between human wants and needs, consumption and the impact on the environment,” explains Evergreen Theatre’s Sean Fraser. “Students learn how specific actions like turning down the heat or turning off the lights can benefit endangered species like the Polar Bear and Whooping Crane.”
