Teams of technical experts are investigating the cause of odour releases believed to be associated with the start up of new equipment at Syncrude’s Mildred Lake Facility.

Syncrude responded to odour complaints from the community of Fort McKay over the weekend with increased air quality monitoring and additional resources to determine the cause of the issue.

The complaints are similar to ones reported on April 28th when an ammonia release occurred during the start up of the new flue gas desulphurization (FGD) unit. The cause of that incident was rectified and the current investigation is focusing on other possible operational factors.

Syncrude continues to work closely with regulators and local stakeholders and is providing regular updates to all interested parties.

Syncrude asks that all concerns and complaints of odour originating from any regional source be reported to the Alberta Environment 24-hour hotline at 1-800-222-6514.

The Syncrude Project is a joint venture operated by Syncrude Canada Ltd. and owned by Canadian Oil Sands Limited, ConocoPhillips Oilsands Partnership II, Imperial Oil Resources, Mocal Energy Limited, Murphy Oil Company Ltd., Nexen Oil Sands Partnership, and Petro-Canada Oil and Gas.
