(Fort McMurray, Alberta) – On the evening of February 20th, 2006 the boom of a 500-ton crane slowly lowered causing the crane to upset and strike a building and trailer in Syncrude’s Upgrading plant. People were evacuated from the area as a precautionary measure to minimize any unnecessary exposure to the incident.

As a result of the incident, six individuals were sent for medical evaluation and were later released.

A recovery plan has been developed and is in the process of being implemented. Syncrude has brought in a team of crane recovery specialists to assist in the recovery.

“In an effort to protect the ongoing safety of Syncrude employees and contractors, personnel in the area are limited to those necessary for plant operations,” said Jim Carter, Syncrude President and Chief Operating Officer.

All UE-1 personnel, Upgrading, Utilities and Extraction shutdown crews, and office personnel working in or the vicinity of Frank Spragins complex have been asked not to report to work from 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, through to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 22. Personnel are expected to report for their regularly scheduled shift on the evening of Wednesday, February 22, 2006, and all shifts thereafter.

Further updates will be issued as necessary.
