Syncrude invests $200,000 to bring award-winning Science-in-a-crate program to region

Company also takes naming rights to future Sports and Wellness Centre at Keyano

(Fort McMurray, Alberta) – Syncrude Canada Ltd. is thinking inside the box with a major contribution announced today to increase the availability of Science Alberta Foundation’s Science-In-A-Crate Program in Fort McMurray and Fort McKay schools.

Syncrude is committing $100,000 per year for the next two years in support of an initiative that?s designed to make learning about science and math effective, relevant and enjoyable for students in Grades K to 11.

“Knowledge and innovation form the foundation of Syncrude’s success,” said Syncrude CEO Charles Ruigrok. “We need to pass on our passion for science and learning to the youth in our community to foster our future success. So, we are pleased to back a program that’s geared toward increasing science literacy and awareness among local youth.”

Each crate contains an array of hands-on activities, mysteries, comics and other creative approaches to bring science alive in the hearts and minds of the students.

“It’s particularly satisfying to improve access to this award-winning crate program in our region,” said Charles.

Science Alberta has made arrangements to develop a network of teachers in Fort McMurray and Fort McKay who will act as learning advocates within the schools to implement and facilitate best practices in science instruction. Teachers in both communities will have priority access to all of Science Alberta’s 42 crate topics.

Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre

Syncrude and Keyano College also announced today that Syncrude will take the naming rights to the Sports and Wellness Centre at Keyano College. Last year, Syncrude announced an $800,000 multi-year donation, $500,000 of which was dedicated to the new community Sport and Wellness Centre and the balance to Keyano Theatre’s Arts Alive Series and student scholarships.

“Syncrude has a long history of working with Keyano College to help make our region a great place to live,” said Charles. “Syncrude is honoured to have its name associated with a long-anticipated facility that will help fill the recreational needs in our community.”
